1. The occurrence of sialic acid in eggs and oviducts of Triturus viridescens has been studied.
2. Regions B and D of the oviducts contain sialic acid. A part of the sialic acid in D may be free. Sialic acid was not detected in regions A, C, or E.
3. Sialic acid is present in the egg capsule, but was not detected in coelomic eggs or in decapsulated eggs from oviducal region E. Part of the sialic acid of the capsule may be free.
4. Available evidence suggests that the sialic acid of the capsule is in layers J2 and J4, and perhaps in layer J5, as well.
5. The possible significance of the findings with regard to fertilization is discussed.
