THE RATE OF OVIPOSITION IN THE FRUIT FLY, DROSOPHILA

HERBERT SHAPIRO 1

1 From the Zoölogiccl Laboratory, Columbia University, and the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass

• The rates of egg-laying of certain mutants of Drosophila melanogaster and of two races of Drosophila obscura were studied and compared with certain other cases for which data are presented by the authors. The fecundity of hybrids of Drosophila melanogaster was also studied. An empirical equation describes the egg-laying curves of all the flies studied (about 93 in number) and is [See formula in the PDF file] where T represents the total number of eggs already laid at the time t, and e is the base of natural logarithms. The constants a are shown to be correlated with the total number of eggs deposited.
