The data presented indicate that the transfer of phosphate across the yeast cell membrane is dependent almost entirely on the carbohydrate metabolism of the cell. A maximum quantity of phosphorus is transferred into the cell when high external carbohydrate concentration is maintained and when the temperature is held at 37° C. The presence or absence of oxygen is not very important in promoting phosphorus transfer. Very little phosphorus will diffuse into yeast at 10° C. in the absence of sugar.
