Real-time video clip of a successful sting-and-pull attack by Conus californicus (corresponding to printed text Fig. 1). The snail extends the proboscis and stings the fish on the ventral surface in the region of the gill, and the fish immediately struggles for 4-5 s before it is sufficiently immobilized so that it can be pulled into the expanding rostrum. The same snail had previously stung the fish two other times. Length of the fish is 2.2 cm.
Real-time video clip of an unsuccessful extend-and-engulf feeding attempt by Conus californicus (corresponding to printed text Fig. 2). The fish had previously been stung by the same snail but managed to escape. Although the snail explores the fish with its proboscis at the beginning of the clip, it does not sting again. Instead, it withdraws the proboscis and attempts to engulf the fish in the gaping rostrum. The fish escapes at the end of the clip after being nearly ingested. Length of the fish is 1.5 cm.
