Real-time movie of the foot cilia of Lymnaea observed by interference reflection microscopy (corresponding to Fig. 5). Lymnaea locomoted from right to left in this view, and then stopped. The cilia in some island-like regions (one of these is indicated by an arrow) showed a periodic and coordinated beating movement, whereas those in the other regions appeared to merely glide on the glass substrate. When the locomotion of Lymnaea stopped, the beating as well as the gliding movement of the cilia also stopped.
